We put a great emphasis on health. It is important to be fit. We talk about obesity, and change our diets to become thinner, and in better shape. When we’re sick, we go to the doctor. Why isn’t there the same urgency when dealing with our mental health? How many mental exercises do you do a day? When was the last time you visited a mental health professional?
Now, I am, by no means, preaching to rush out to get your head shrinked, or whatever. I’d rather not, myself, personally. And I expect others prefer to make that decision on their own as well. I have no training in mental health, but I would like to offer some advice that has been passed on to me, or that I’ve picked up during my 19 years on this planet.
It is important to have balance. We must have a focus in life, but it cannot take over everything. We can’t have too much work, and not enough play, in the same way that constant play will turn our brains to goo. We need work to strengthen the mind. It’s like, in drama. I’ve been taught mainly to perform in a method format. This means, being completely and totally into character. This kind of intense acting, is emotional and physical, and can easily wear down the mind. Which is why breaks are encouraged. I remember a particular project, which involved a half hour or so of crying. Rehearsals were intense, and important. But equally important was taking breaks to laugh, run around, dance, and feel something other than the intensity of human existence.
Everyone has stress. Not all of it is negative. It is important to isolate negative stress, and either find a way to turn it positive, or to discard it altogether. Positive stress is what causes determination and perseverance. When you strain a muscle, in the working sense, not in the injured one, it creates friction and heat. Stress provides an excellent source of energy, that can be directed in a constructive manner.
Like I mentioned before, I am not a replacement for a mental health professional. But, I hope you will consider it, and consider the unneeded weight you may be placing on your mind.
Also, I would suggest checking out the website of the Canadian Mental Health Association for more information on mental health, and ways to make sure you are in the right frame of mind to be successful in life.

Ever considered becoming one, a mental health professional, that is? I think you’d make an amazing one.
This post is much appreciated!
Reply: Ha ha, thank-you! I’m afraid most people probably wouldn’t want a crazy girl like me preaching to them about mental health though!
I agree with Nellie’s comment. I think that people tend to forget about their mental health, with our everday busy lives, we just seem to leave it behind.
P.S you didn’t ruin anything about Robin for me lol. I just hope she tells Patrick and they can be together…and live happily ever after. But as we all know, happily ever afters don’t exist in soaps :P.
Reply: Why can’t we have one happily ever after? Just one? Please? Also, I’m really digging Michael’s “Lil Gangsta,” thing going on. It’s so much !ANGST waiting to happen!
*appreciates post by giving Aisling a nice warm bear hug* :3
A very nice post indeed. And it reminds me that I need to get off my butt and actually make the appointment I’ve been meaning to for the past few days.
I visited a mental health professional (sort of) today. And last week. And the week before.
I’m crazier than you!
I don’t think I would get myself checked out for a mental health problem unless I noticed something was wrong. At the moment, I wouldn’t even know where to go to get checked out for a mental health problem.
First paragraph had me. It’s so true, everyone seems to focus on physical health. I’m crap at keeping a balance. I go from working way too many hours and hardly sleeping for 2 weeks, to 2 weeks of turning my brain to vodka soaked goo. I’m in that gap between high school and uni and I need some routine to get my head straight again! Great post…!
Lovely Post
Ooh, awesome advice. I’ve always held that life relies on a delicate balance; you can’t have too much of anything even if it’s a good thing. Also, I’m pretty interested in psychology and I like reading motivational/self-help books from time to time, but I’ve never been to a mental health professional and I don’t really know anyone else who has.
That was great advice, I completely agree that we all need to find a balance. I think I need to work on turning my stress into determination.
I love that word: Balance. Sometimes, people overdo the whole healthy thing as well, always popping vitamin pills, always eating fruits, not allowing themselves to have a chocolate bar, or instant noodles, etc…
you need the good and the bad to balance it out…
... written before about being sure to be balanced mentally. But I am not completely naive, and I realize that sometimes, our lives just get a few steps out of ...
