As I’ve mentioned, oh, a lot, before, I am a theatre nerd. As such, one of my biggest regrets is not living in New York City. It seems very unfair that I am so far away from the pumping heart of musical theatre, which is my one true love.
Luckily, someone seemed to realize that Broadway shows don’t belong just in a theatre. Sure, that is where they are at their sweetest, but that doesn’t mean that a video adaptation can’t also be tasty. Which is why we have Broadway plays in video format! It really is a modern-day theatre miracle! It allows everyone to enjoy the art-form on some level, and exposes these amazing works to different audiences.
Think about it. “The hills are alive, with the sound of music…” Would most people know this immortal line, from The Sound of Music, if the film featuring the absolutely captivating Julie Andrews had never been produced?
I adore Broadway- and Off-Broadway-to-Film adaptations more than I can even express. I become excited at the thought of them. Some of my favourites include Chicago, Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, Jesus Christ Superstar, Grease, Annie, Hair … OH! I can go on for ages!
One of my ALL-TIME favourites is Rent, which will be closing June 1st after a 12 year run. I will be seeing the Canadian tour in May, although, not with any of the original cast members, such is the way of the Canuck tour! While I knew some of the songs prior to seeing the film (some songs are just so well-known among theatre communities, that they’re impossible to not encounter!), the film allowed me to really experience the play. Especially since the cast of the film, consists of the majority of the original Broadway cast! That is extremely special. And, the making of the musical has a great story.
Currently, playing on repeat for most of the day, is the song “Take Me Or Leave Me,” which is performed by Maureen and Joanne, as they have a huge falling out, during their engagement ceremony!! Something about this song just pulls me to it. It’s fun, while still being a little bit sad, and the characters are both just so strong in their own right, which makes it a pleasure to watch. But don’t take my word for it– watch it on YouTube. While Tracie Thoms is not the original Joanne, her and Idina Menzel (whom is married to Taye Diggs- one beautiful specimen of a man) have amazing chemistry!
“Take Me Or Leave Me,” is one of my favourite songs to perform. In fact, I perform it whenever I am required to do a Broadway piece, as a duet, with another female (it happens more often than you would think!).
The point of this, is that, there is no reason for you to sit there, like a culture-less bump on a log, when such rich forms of art are so readily available at your local Blockbuster! You may say that musicals “aren’t your thing,” but, realistically, there really is a musical out there for everyone!!

How dare you speak of musicals without mentioning Fred Astaire! You deserve a good correction. When I start working, the big boxset of Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers movies is one of the first things I will buy.
I love musicals too! Some of my favorites are The Sound of Music, Hairspray, and Cats. Sweeney Todd was pretty good too! I love when people just burst into song. I wish real life was like that. It’d be much more lively and entertaining for sure.
I love Phantom of the Opera because it is SEXY beyond all measure. Blues Brothers is another one of my favourites because it combines elaborate car pile ups with brilliant music. Little Pet Shop of Horrors – it has a talking plant that says ‘tough titties’ which should be enough to convince anyone. Freaking ace.
I love some musicals – like the Sound of Music. But I don’t like others… Either way, though, I’d love to be on Broadway (right now) watching a musical.
This is somewhat related, but not especially… I’ve always wanted to see an opera, but I’ve yet to have the chance.
Musicals are amazing! Whether they’re modern or old, they’re just simply enchanting. I love Wicked, and of course, The Sound of Music.
“You may say that musicals “aren’t your thing,†but, realistically, there really is a musical out there for everyone!!”
Yes, there is! For me it’s Hairspray, both the original and the new one which just so happens to have been filmed at my school. Which wouldn’t make me biased in any way, of course.
Have you seen The Producers? I’ve seen it on Broadway 3 years ago, and I seriously never laughed so much in life! It wass the most hilarious piece of entertainment I’ve ever seen. I think being German and understanding German made it even funnier for me than for the average audience, but it’s still pretty amazing.
Unfortunately the 2005 movie version doesn’t compare to the live show, somehow it’s much more fun when you see it on stage.
I’ve also seen Wicked two years ago, I can highly recommend that too for your next visit on Broadway
Oh no sorry for double posting, but I forgot to mention how much I love the classic musicals as well! Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire and Julie Andrews are some of the greatest musical stars ever!
Oh, I love musicals too and my favorite musical is Annie, it just appeals very well to both my optimism and my love for nostalgia. And I dig the song Take me or leave me, I even made new lyrics to it last year when I had writing-block while writing Nanowrimo (I called it “I’ll buy wordcount for sale”). You should listen to the soundtrack from the musical Wicked, it has Idina Menzel to and it’s a wonderful story. I’m completely addicted to it at the moment
Well, anyway, I like your blog and I just had to comment seeing as I love musicals myself. Have a nice day!
... should know now that I am crazy about musical theatre. I honestly believe that film adaptations of Broadway musicals are mystical things sent from some sort of higher power. I’ve taken endless emotional beatings from my friends ...
