There seems to be a bunch of drama going around with unrequested reviews going around. Well, I’m NOT interested in joining in that nonsense, but I thought it might be fun to review the Big Bad Bitch herself, Jem. Why? Because people rarely do.
So, heading on over to Jemjabella, first off I want to say that this is NOT my favourite design by Jem. In fact, it is probably quite near my least favourite. I believe when Jem designed it she was going through a phase where she wanted her site to be more “blogcentric” and while the layout achieves this, the design is just.. eh.
It’s no secret that Jem loves blue. But, seriously, there IS such thing as TOO MUCH BLUE. I once counted the shades of blue, so let’s do this again. Including the little icons on the sidebar, there are THIRTEEN shades of blue on this page. Even the font is a shade of blue-grey. It’s overwhelming. Normally, I adore light on dark but I find the combination of the blue-grey and the dark blue to be a touch difficult to read on the longer entries. It’s not unbareable, but it’s not the epitome of comfort. Then again, that could be the effect she’s going for. Perhaps keeping your audience in a state of not-quite-conscious discomfort is a nice way to gain control.
As I mentioned earlier, I do enjoy the layout of the page. I like how there are 10 entries a page, although I was confused the first time I clicked on the Page 2 pagination link at the bottom and ended up 11 entries later than I asumed I would be! The visited link colour on the sidebar is a bit too dark.
I find that the Blogmatter and Projects sections don’t really get a lot of attention where they are. Of course, they are sort of secondary in terms of content for the site. I know that I would appreciate it if your Links page was big and bold and noticeable so I could get more traffic to my site. I would appreciate that MORE if the link to me linked to my actual site! Some of your links need to be updated or removed (Ava Rae, As a Dream, Chiklita, Dubious, Liquid Essence, Neonglow and of course AISLING).
Your little header image is cute. It’s my favourite part of this whole thing. I’m not a fan of the colours for the navigation. The red isn’t too bad, but the yellow is a bit jarring. I think it’s mainly that it’s a green-tinted yellow. The darker yellow on the dark blue would’ve worked a bit better, or even a light shade of blue, like your tagline. ANYTHING but neon asparagus pee colour, please!
On to your About page, the first thing I notice is that your subnavigation is… um… boring. VERY boring.
While you’re taking the time to bold WEB DEVELOPER perhaps you could bold JEMMA. You know, really link the two to drive the point home. Why do Karl, Hex and Fudge get bolding status, and Ginger and Afro get the shaft? Pfft.
Your Geek t-shirts page is definitely cute and unique, but not entirely interesting. … Unfortunately I don’t have any suggestions, except maybe to buy more shirts so this page is updated more often.
Your Internet History page is fine, apart from a typo in “After an upgrade disasted in December 2008.” “Disasted” should be “disaster.”
Er…
“Besides jemjabella, I own and run several separate sites. My tutorial site, tutorialtastic; I took over the running of the quilting bee in May 2006 after having provided programming and technical support for over a year; I also run rev.iew.me – the website reviewing community. When I’m not working on my this site, these are where my time goes.”
… Do you have issues with capitalizing the things that you name? Are we going to be welcoming little william come November?
Contacting Me page… why not just list each of the questions, and then write NO! really big under it?
Hey, look, light blue buttons on your misc stuff page! That’s shade #14 of blue.
Your Articles page is nicely organized. I’m not looking at all of them though, because I am lazy. I clicked on your Unrequested Website Reviews article, however, because I am writing a review of your site. It’s… kind of short. It’s less of an article and more of… Jem’s personal disclaimer on why she will write reviews, even if you haven’t asked her to.
I clicked onto your review of Amelie‘s site, since she is someone I know, and completely burst out laughing at “I see blue, more blue, lots more blue and wait, what’s this? Ooh, pink.” Replace pink with red and neon asparagus pee yellow, and we have the first impression of your current design!
Um. I never even noticed that you offered avatars before. It never even occurred to me that you would. I always saw you as more of a… hardcore coding-type, and less of a graphic hander-outter.
OMG LADYBUGS. *cries*
I think your scripts section is linked… A LOT of times. I remember seeing it linked TWICE on your About page, I believe. Now it’s in Useful Stuff, and it ALSO has its own giant link in the main navigation. WE GET IT.
I remember when we made Ninjas for the Army, and they had white backgrounds to match your page and they floated all nicely, and that looked really cool. And now they’re on a dark blue background, so they’re these little white blocks and that is not as cool.
And thus concludes my journey through Jemjabella. Overall, it’s hard to find a lot to complain about in terms of content, other than the fact that there isn’t a lot of new stuff popping up.
It’s just the design that irks me, really. Complementary colours exist for a reason. I like pink, but…

IT’S TOO MUCH!
Disclaimer: These are pure facts. Someone DID die and make me the King of the Internet. And I purely mean to offend Jem with this review.

Oh noes! How dare you do this to poor innocent lil’ Jemmie… oh wait, wrong victim, carry on.
Oh and look someone else was also confused by the pagination. It took me 2 weeks to realize what was going on
*makes large stack of tomatoes*
Reply: Lol. Yeah, I was trying to flip to the previous entry to see who else had commented and ended up a week earlier!
You know what, it never occurred to me that there are 13 shades of blue on my site (well, ok, 14). I only really see 3… the content, the links (and tagline), and then the header. It’s this kind of design “blindness” that told me some 8-9 years ago that I ain’t never gonna make it as a designer, and that’s when I started bashing out code. Goes to show that after all this practice, I still suck at the layouty business, and I made the right choice.
I think this review should have more insults in. You forgot to tell me how much of a meanie whore I am, and you missed the opportunity to tell me how one of my pages has 19 mark-up errors on it. Your review sucks
Reply: I tried to point out things you DON’T ALREADY KNOW. And I DID call you a Big Bad Bitch, so…
I totally agree with your review. Jem has a nice blog, indeed. It’s just the design part that I do not like. It’s just too much blue for my taste, and in my opinion, not even attractive shades of blue. Then again, I’ve always been more of a pastel fan. I do hope that Jem changes the layout soon. Not just because my eyes don’t like the colors, but because it’s been up a while, and I like change.
Reply: I hope I can contribute to the changing of the layout, yes.
But Jem, why would she write those things in her review when you already know that you are a huge meanie whore and that one of your pages has 19 mark-up errors on it.?
Reply: Exactly. Also, a “whore” would suggest that Jem receives payment.
@Britney: I wanted to change it about 3 months ago… it’s just a lack of inspiration, energy, motivation, free time, (add some more excuses to make it sound dramatic) etc that prevents me from doing so.
Shush Ben. Nobody asked for your logic and reasoning! *stabs*
Fair review. However, your content area contains quite a lot of blue.
You could say that mine contains too much purple, though, so… meh.
However, I do agree with most of this review.
Reply: My content area is two shades of teal. Your purple is only in your header and footer. We use additional colours and shades to complement them. Apart from Jem’s navigation, EVERY OTHER COLOUR is a shade of blue.
OMG JEM IS SUCH A MEANIE WHORE I AM SO GLAD U WROTE DIS REVIEW GO AISLING!!!!11oneone~~
… kidding, of course. I agree with this review.
I’ve always thought that the current layout is ~too blue~. I miss that one that was up maybe a year ago, that was blue and orange. It was nice. But, of course, the focus is on the content, which is obviously very good.
Reply: I liked her last one. It had a white content area and blue accents and rounded corners and was REALLY nice. I also recall liking her Chocolate Mint one. Jem really has one style. She generally goes top banner all the way across, content area below. That’s why the rounded one was SO refreshing, but then she sort of just… bounced back.
I do agree that Jem’s design contains too much blue. I now see what you mean. <3
You know what else you forgot to mention? The font. It’s the font that’s really annoying me lately.
Reply: Ehh, the font’s not too bad. I really only get up in the face’s of others if they use something like… Century Gothic as a body font. Euuurgg.
Definitely agree with you about the too much blue thing. I love blue (my own layout probably has too much blue in it, oops :P) but contrast with other colors is always nice.
ZOMG! How could you totally bash Jem and her site! YOUR REVIEW SUCKS BALLS (if that’s possible!) What did she eva do 2 U?!?!?!?!111kdfsjkf jkfo w
Wow, I never noticed that many shades of blue either. Haha, nice review!
Reply: We’ve been friends for over a year, and she still calls me Eyeling in her head! D:
You got balls! And I actually agree with you about the layout – I don’t particularly like it either haha.
Nice review nice review.
That’s it, Jem. I’m making you a new design.
Reply: Melly was going to, but we decided it would give the haters~ more ammo. Like… “OMG JEM SUX SO HARD SHE CANT MAKE HER OWN LYTS.~*~*~”
HAHAHA awesome review. I can’t stop laughing now.
Lol, nice one Kinkyling.
You know what, that pink version actually looks quite nice on my work screen. Now that gives me ideas…
*ducks*
Reply: Oh, dear God..
Now now Ling, don’t go about stirring up teh dramaz! D:
Am I the only one that doesn’t mind blue?? I actually like the blue! The bad part is the pukeish yellow/green
Am I the only one who likes that spring green color?
Reply: Yup.
I did it! I did it! I got rid of the layout
Reply: YAY! *dies happy*
I laughed so hard when I read this, so I had to read it again! It still had the same effect. And I like the new layout Jem!!!
LMAO.
This is the most amusing review I’ve read… I have nothing against Jem at all but this was just too funny. The “big, bad, bitch.”… haha.
Whoooa, amazing review Aisling! You did a great job pointing out what seemed to be wrong with Jem’s site.. that was a really brave move! Plus I think people who are actually capable of making unrequested reviews are pretty strong inside so.. wonderful wonderful job.
Btw I like your layout so much.. and you ARE using WordPress?
Woot it doesn’t seem so WordPress-y, I could guarantee you
at least not so much like the typical WordPress, but it does seem a lot greater! And I love how in the nav clicking on the little cartoon girl could send you back to the top.. very pretty. And absolutely creative.
Btw Jem never really had a pink layout did she?
... much nagging and one amusing — and wholly accurate — unrequested review I finally decided to get off my arse and finish changing my layout, something that has been on the ...
Teehee, this was my most favourite post ever.
As a victim of an open review by Jem, this made my day. You are one brave little soldier.
