Now that I have two decades under my belt, I am able to look back on my hairstyles and think “who let me go out like that?” and “where was my hairbrush for the entire year of 2000?” And that is what I am here to share with you today!
Of course, I coul
d post photos of my hair in junior high, but then I’d have to kill all of you because ERGLACK, it was bad. It was blonde, mainly, but very curly and gross with awful bangs. Thankfully, none of these photos have manifested online, but here is a close example from when I was about 15ish and clearly hadn’t thought about making my hair look nice before busting out the webcam.
Please note how it is, like, a shade of toxic yellow… that is not a camera flaw, it was actually pretty close to that colour. Also, my glasses are not very attractive, and why I ever thought a baby blue Angel sweater was nice, I’ll never know.
For a while, I continued to favour blonde, even though it washes me out. In grade 11, I went through a curly haired phase, with bangs which wasn’t too bad, but made me look about 10.
One Hallowe’en, I used this black wash out colour for my costume. Unfortunately, the colour had a blue base. I was blonde. I’m sure you all know your colours. In an effort to cover the green, which WOULD NOT wash out, I attempted to dye my hair brown… and the green SHOWED THROUGH, leaving this mouldy greenish brown colour.
Luckily, high school was coming to an end, and I was finally starting to gain some sense. For a few months, my hair looked normal. It was a nice, normal colour and a manageable length that looked pleasant both straight and curled:
In Katimavik, I didn’t really have money for a hair cut, so it continued to grow, and it still looked okay most of the time, albeit a bit strangely multicoloured, and a tad frizzy:
All good things must come to an end, however, and by the following summer, it was starting to look a bit freaky, so be honest, all gross and tangly at the bottom. And who has super long straight hair these days? I felt like a hippy. Not to mention all the work it took to make it look that crappy! The ends were so gross I had to brush them constantly because they would just tangle!
So, finally, I chopped it:
And then, then after 10 years of switching back and forth between varying shades of blonde, and varing shades of dark brown (with some crazy experimental colours thrown in for good teenage measure, of course), something possessed me to try auburn.
And apparently, I should have tried it sooner, because I’ve NEVER had more positive comments on my hair in my life!
Which brings me to present day:
SoOoOooo… what do you guys think of how my hair has progressed? Any particular shade or style that you prefer?
Even more interesting, how often have you changed your hair? Has it gone through a transformation like mine?
OR, how WOULD you do your hair if you could? The new year is a time for reinvention, after all! For example, I’d LOVE to do some black and hot pink, but my work won’t let me.

I think your current color is the best. You are one hot mama.
It definitely has progressed for the best. My particular favorite is the green.
I already told you how I want my hair. All razor cut and choppy and scene and lesbian and stuff. I might dye it too. We’ll see.
It’s definitely got better with time.
My hair hasn’t changed in 10 years o.O
If I’m honest I like #5 the best, and don’t like the recent hairstyles. I prefer curly hair to straight, my hair is quite long (perhaps longer than your #5, and almost the same colour too) and DEAD STRAIGHT. It messes up too easily, especially since it’s thin and light.
Ok, so curly hair might tangle more, but nobody notices. When your usually dead straight hair is slightly out of place, it’s really noticable. You have to religiously carry a hairbrush. I usually just braid it if I’m going out, because that’s less tacky than a pigtail and it messes up less.
I also used to have hair like your recent photos… one sec: http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v63/176/53/60506900/n60506900_31267836_6676.jpg (excuse the outfit, and see what I mean about it messing?)
OH EM GEE I know the first two people in the pictures! Except… maybe I won’t tell you who they are because they’re male/about 50.
Anyway, I think you look super nice with red hair. I love the curls in the second auburn picture, but you also look great with it straight and short. So YAY.
I definitely agree with Jem – your current hairstyle is the best. I think the colour is lovely, too! <3
I think the auburn color really goes the best with your skin tone. I like the shorter cut, but for going out the soft curls of the second auburn picture looks really nice.
My hair has gone through changes. I’ve tried blonde, and it was soo wrong. I prefer my natural color. I just mess with the length every so often. I’ll cut it really short, then let it grow out for a few years before cutting it again.
For the last three years I’ve been chemically straightening it. I’ve still gone back and forth in lengths, until about a year and a half ago. I stopped cutting it then. So right now it resembles your #5 picture because I’ve also decided that all that chemical is damaging my hair. My curls are coming back, but I’m not sure if I hate them as much as I used to.0
I’m cutting it in October (after my best friends’ wedding that I’m in … I’ve been growing it out for her). Maybe then I’ll make a similar post to this one
It’s amazing how many changes we make in a decade, isn’t it? It’s fun to look back on in posts like these. As we go through them, it doesn’t seem to make as big an impact as it does years later.
I think it became much better through time. Youth sins, we all have them.
I really like the haircut in the middle of the three pictures next to each other. It suits you very well. I’m still looking for a haircut that looks good on me and until that day I will look like a hippie, with long straight hair. Yup.
AHHH, thank you for this, Aisling! It makes me feel better that my sister and I weren’t the only ones to go through the (somewhat horrible) teenage years of various styles, colours and more styles.
While my sister takes the crown – and I mean this seriously, 20 icons wouldn’t be enough to portray every style – I’ve had purple, green and black hair over NATURAL red…you can imagine my parents responses to this. I bleached it in 2006 to get all those colours out, and have died my already-red hair a maroon colour.
So, not alone! I also think your various hair styles were victim to the time? I’m not calling you old by any means, but in comparison to my sister’s various looks, the time was different, as were the trends.
I’d say the last four hairstyles of your are definitely the best. Auburn looks cute on you
Boy, I’ve had more than my share of disastrous hairstyles. I’ve gone through various colours, from straight to curly to straight dreads (which took 3 week to untangle..) I used to change my hair quite a bit, when I lived with my hairdresser sister, but I really haven’t done a thing to this mass of hair on my head in a year :/
I definitely love the auburn! I think it suits your skin tone best. It’s very pretty
Mine’s just gone through various stages of straight, with and without bangs. It was waist-length for a good long while and then I donated it when I was 14. Two years ago I ditched the awful straight bangs and got side ones, and now it’s just sort of stayed at that, a little past shoulder length. I dyed a few pieces deep reddish-violet, and it seems to look alright, so I’ll probably leave it at that for the time being
I think auburn is the best colour. As for the actual style, they all look good!
LOL I noticed that the images jumped from linghair5 to 7 so I had to look at linghair6… and now I can see why you didn’t include it!
Reply: yeah, I hate you Yaklee.
Auburn is definitely the best shade
I don’t color/highlight my hair. It’s black, so if I wanted to do anything with it I’d have to bleach it first, which isn’t the greatest thing to do to your hair and the whole process takes way more effort than I care to invest in my hair. My hair has gone through varying lengths throughout the years, but from sixth grade onwards it’s always been layered!
You have really pretty hair in recent times — especially with the layers and the colours! My hair has gone through extreme transformations throughout the last decade… I’ve been all colours of the rainbow bar green and blue, and all sorts of lengths. I have had it short and spiky, long and flicky and big and frazzled. Right now it’s just a simple little pixie crop, and dyed my natural colour (which I never see, so I just assume it is).
Oooh liking the new colour and cut. Stick with that colour, you look good with it.
My hair’s been the same for the past two and half years. I don’t have the heart to change it since I’ve been told that I look good with this style. I’ve cut it shorter or whatever, but it’s the same really. Maybe 2010 will bring something different.
I definitely like the recent auburn haircolor the best, but I liked the longer hair on you, as well. All in all, those are not as hideous as mine have been in the past, trust me. I mean, I had ORANGE hair at some point of junior high, but that’s way back when I had no sense of personal style either, so I guess it can be forgiven. We shouldn’t be judged on how our hair might have lookedin juior high, I mean we were all jus basically kids with no sense back then, right?
Anyway, looking good! Like I said, the auburn hair suits you:)
My favourite looks for you would be the most recent one, and the middle picture in those three grouped together. But I think you were really working the long fair hair for a while.
And FOMG, you stole my thought… I was totally going to get a pink streak in my (black) hair. :<
As for me… my hair has changed a lot in a very short time. For years I had nothing but the short blonde hair, then I grew it out, then dyed it black, then decided on a whim to have it dyed blonde again, then got bored with that and had it dyed brunette with red streaks, then decided the brown wasn't dark enough and dyed it black again. And now I'm starting to miss my blonde hair.
I liked the way it felt when it was very short.
My favorite is your current look – but wow, you have quite the evolution of hairstyles/colors going on! That’s pretty impressive.
I’m thinking about doing some hair changes this year and going back to boy-short since I love not having to deal with it AT ALL. It’s just below my ears now and touching my neck and drives me crazy. I love the length your hair is now, but I can never keep mine there for long before it irritates me.
Stick with the current cut – that’s pretty! I think you look great with darker hair.
I love the colour it is now! I would love to have such long hair too, I made the mistake of cutting it into a bob… gosh I miss my long hair.
I never dyed my hair up until I was about 18, I did the little wash-in, wash-out ones but nothing big. I think I’ve made up for it though, my hair has been brown with caramel highlights, dark brown, black, brown with dark purple through it, platinum blonde, honey blonde, brown with red/auburn through it. This post actually made me quite sad, how pathetic lol. I was supposed to be having my hair done today, but I was too sick to go
I’m currently going for your colour with some different shades of brown through it, it’s just so hard to get rid of the blonde once you have it.
I like your latest style.
I was on my way to blonde back (my natural colour), but my hair looked absolutely horrible so I am redhead again. :/ Although I really love my red hair.
Shorter, red hair looks good on you; you should definitely stick with it longer. I’m not really enthusiastic about pink mixed with anything – people rarely look good in it. Though, you could probably pull off anything
.
You reminded me of a time I tried to dye my hair blue; my original colour was greyish-brown thus the paint turned out to be green :P. Later on I always dyed it various shades of red (not really noticeable, since my schools didn’t allow it) and after years of paint jobs it was almost brown. Currently I have a reddish-red hair with a black base and I love it
.
I do love auburn. I’ve tried it myself, although I find I work better with red dyes that have a purple base (like a deep magenta or a metallic purple). But I also liked your brown, straight long hair!
I like your hair style back in 06 and it made you look a little like Britney Spears (i’m not sure if this is going to be taken as a compliment or otherwise but its the first!~). Your hair looked real good that year! =)
