Ah, alliteration. And can I just say, Alexandre Bilodeau, first Canadian Gold on Canadian Soil!!!!
Last night the country completely glowed after Alex completely and totally kicked ass in Mens’ Moguls. It was made ever so sweet by him taking former-Canadian and now Aussie asshole, Dale Whatshisname’s title away from him! But Alex didn’t even care, because this win wasn’t about beating Douchey Dale, but about us. And mainly, about his older brother, with CP, who has been his inspiration his whole life. Alex, we love you soooo much!
In celebration of the world getting another taste of how awesome Canada is, I wanted to share some of the commercials being broadcast while we watch the Games (live! Which has caused some strangeness on Twitter, with most American broadcasts being shown 20 minutes behind our live feeds!). These are commercials that I think really evoke the Canadian spirit that I know and love.
Molson Canadian- Made from Canada: This is your typical Canadian beer commercial. It’s a little rough around the edges and a bit self-mocking. It has AMAZING views of the mountains (which I live near!), and a lot of the things they say about Canadian spirit are REALLY true. Canada. Beer. Adventure. ‘Nuff said.
Coke Olympic Hockey: Hockey is OUR game. Just ask Slovakia, who had their asses handed to them by our Women’s team two nights ago (18-0? Heck yeah.) I am not into sports. I don’t really follow hockey. But get a Canadian team in the Stanley Cup final, or even better, have us in the Olympics, and I go WILD. At first I was like “Heyyy, Coke is American!” but after a while, it comes down to MOST things being American, but with Canadian counterparts. This commercial was definitely made with Canada, and only Canada, in mind. And I pretty much cry at “Let’s make sure everyone knows whose game they’re playing.” It’s true. YOU MIGHT AS WELL ALL GO HOME NOW, K?!
CTV, I Believe with Nikki Yanofsky: This is the song from CTV’s Olympic Broadcast of the Olympics. You may recognize Nikki Yanofsky from her performance of “O Canada” at the Opening Ceremonies. This girl is only 16! On her 14th birthday, she played Carnegie Hall in NYC. She’s someone to look out for. Other than that, this commercial once again shows the amazing scenery of Canada, features a bunch of our athletes, has clips of our teams in past Olympics, and clips of the torch run this year with us all being very excited (a friend of mine actually carried the torch in Vernon, BC, and another friend of mine is a BC Ambassador and was at the Opening Ceremonies!). Some people think this song is annoying, but I love it. I think it’s very Canadian, in the way it shows the Olympics as really a team effort– not just from the athletes, but from all of us.
So, for my Canadian readers: GO US!! Make sure you catch some events this year, even if you don’t think you’re really into that sort of thing. This will be history one day, and it’s a really big deal. You live in SUCH an amazing country. We have so many opportunities here.
For my other readers, I’d also suggest you watch, so you can see how cool my country is! I know, I gush about it a lot, so now is your opportunity to see it for yourself!

I was so happy that he won! What a sweet story. <3 Obviously I wanted a Canadian to win, but he was the best one, because his backstory is so lovely.
Those commercials are great too. I feel happy for actually knowing what commercials people are talking about for once; I never watch TV, so I'm usually out of the loop.
I think my favourite is the Coke commercial
I hate the American delay. Meh Meh Meh Meh Meh!
Alex’s story was so adorable! I don’t even know how to say it, he sounded so sincere and inspirational. What an awesome guy, congrats on the gold
Coke commercials always = win.
I really like the Molson and Coca Cola commercials. Nice usage of Requiem, Molson.
I like the Coca Cola one more, though; it’s so inspiring~ Kind of gives me chills.
