In the spirit of people making apologies and ‘fessing up to things, and others giving up certain pleasures for Lent, I have a confession. Twilight is my Guilty Pleasure. It may be the guiltiest of guilty pleasures. I’m by no means a “Twihard” (in fact, I had to check Urban Dictionary to make sure that was the proper term), but I am definitely a sucker for a love story… apparently even ones where the lead female characters aren’t as strong as I’d like.
I agree that the majority of the books lack no plot until the very end, and then it shows up under developed. I agree that Breaking Dawn was a waste of a book because… I can’t actually recall anything happening apart from the gruesome bit where Edward eats the mutant baby out of Bella’s stomach.
I think I am in the small percentage of the world that probably prefers the movies to the books, as well. I’m not a KStew fan, although she is growing on me. I am, admittedly, an RPattz fan, mainly left over from his Harry Potter days. I do love how he plays Edward as this manic depressive guy who hates himself. I love how KStew seems like she couldn’t give a damn about Twilight half the time. And I love how Taylor Lautner just loves every minute he spends around his fans, to provide contrast.
Obviously, there’s a dark side to my Guilty Pleasure, which leaves me torn. Since Twilight author Stephenie Meyer is Mormon, she in all likeliness pays 10% of her income to the LDS Church. In 2009, she was ranked as the 26th most powerful celebrity, earning over $50 million. That is a lot of money going right to the people who very much supported Proposition 8. That’s the part that makes me feel sick and uneasy. I can remember when I found out that Prop 8 had passed and bursting into tears, although I live in a completely different country, so it doesn’t really affect me. The thought of me contributing to that, although I am well aware that my donation is minuscule, kind of makes me hate myself.
So! Feel free to judge me, go go go! Also, share your guilty pleasures! (And then give them up for the next 40 days if you are Catholic!)

I LOVED YOU BUT NOW THIS.
The movies are better! Not only do I love RPattz for so blatantly hating the whole franchise, they are just BETTER. They emphasise the few good points (or, you know, make things up, like Bella actually being HAPPY) and downplay the many many weak points.
Sometimes, I feel guilty for watching and enjoying a number of absolutely terrible reality television shows because the more people that watch, the more likely they are to keep making the damn things. I’m feeding the machine!
Sorry to everyone who can’t stand reality TV.
I tried to read it but I didn’t like the style
.
I admit I like to read all the Twilight drama – it’s just a book and people start wars over it.
I like the movies though – as in a comedy stress reliever. Also, I like RPattz – the most funny thing was when me and my friends came back from the first film and argued who would marry him
.
Let’s see… my guilty pleasures would be the same as yours – love stories. I never admit I read those. Also, chocolate (in all forms), fast food (sometimes I love something greasy, when I can’t be bothered with cooking or am in a downer), old photographs and cigarettes.
Stopped being Catholic because my lovely hair would be ruined if sprinkled with ash D: .
The movies are SO much better! Plus, I love RPattz for stating that Edward is a total creep in interviews
I AGREE WITH THIS WHOLE POST.
…okay, enough confessions of the day. Excuse me while I go and pre-order New Moon. Oh wait.
I think this is a perfectly acceptable guilty pleasure.
Mine is Britney Spears. As a metalhead, this can be a bit of a problem. Whatevs.
This is also the first-ever Lent I’ve not been Catholic, so MOAR BRITNEY FOR ME.
I don’t like Robert Pattison. I think the only possibly good thing about the movies (which I haven’t watched, anyway) has to be Taylor Lautner
I never really thought about where Meyer’s income goes. It’s a good thing I only borrowed the first two books from the library…
I own all the Twilight books, but they’re not really my thing. I’ve always been more into crime novels, authors like Ian Rankin and Alex Gray in particular, so that probably makes me less likely to enjoy the Twilights books. But even so, they aren’t very well-written and the plot is just, well, quite boring if I’m honest. Even for a romance.
Twilight is my guilty pleasure as well. I read them before the movies came out, so I never pictured KStew or RPattz while reading the books. I’m a sucker for a love story as well, even though I really cringed at several parts of the book. There’s just something inexplicable about the books that draws you in. It’s definitely not the writing, but I’m still trying to figure that one out!
I’ve never read the books, and I’ve only ever watched the 2nd installation in the cinemas. I burst into laughter so many times inappropriately at so many scenes, which I think the whole cinema hated me for
(they were clearly Twilight fans!)
I didn’t know the author was a mormon!
I read all the books but they made me angry. I really didn’t like them at all. I was a bit into it as I was reading them but then when I closed the last page of the last book, that was it. I was done. It was all over. I realized the books weren’t that good and I went and read something better.
I have nothing against those who like Twilight. I think the idea was really good – I just think the writing could have been better.
I hate these books so much. But, like you, the first one was sort of my guilty pleasure. I read it on a trip to New York, and had a great time reading it. I was bored out of my mind, though, so IT DOESN’T COUNT. Really. The writing (my opinion) is horrible, the characters poorly developed, the romance just BAD. But so entertaining…!
I agree. Movies > Books. RPatz is just cool, and I like Kstew. They both hate Twilight, and I think both of them are actually good actors
But I haven’t bought the books at all…I do, however, now feel bad about paying to see the movies. That’s an awful way to look at where the money goes!
All in all, I fully support hating them, but hypocritically also read them. Meh. At least, the first two. The rest…ew.
