I am watching the Oscars right now, which is one of my favourite parts of the year. I used to act and make short films, so… yeah. Apparently, I didn’t actually see very many films this year– at least not very many Oscar-nominated ones.
The ones I did see were Adventureland, 17 Again, The Proposal, Year One, My Sister’s Keeper, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, (500) Days of Summer, The Time Traveler’s Wife, Inglorious Basterds, The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Lovely Bones.
So, yeah, I feel pretty sad right now. Not to say that the movies weren’t good. Obviously, I LOVE Harry Potter, and I also enjoy Zac Efron (17 Again). You may have already read my take on The Lovely Bones. And we all know about (and have had our share fare of mocking over) the pleasure I receive from Twilight.
My Sister’s Keeper was good, but nowhere as near as good as the book (although I do try to see books and films as separate entities to avoid disappointment). Adventureland and Year One were wastes of my time. (500) Days of Summer may have hit JUST A BIT too close to my real life, auuugh.
Inglorious Basterds was obviously really amazing, except I almost threw up a few times. Which is why nobody should eat while watching Tarantino.
I mean, I know I was distracted last year, but this is rather disgraceful. Usually I try to see as many Oscar-nominated films as I can.
Okay, okay, I did not see Avatar. The reasons for that being 1) it is in 3D and I hate 3D and 2) there’s lots of Papyrus, and Papyrus induces vomiting in my kind. But I would like very much to see Up in the Air, Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire, A Single Man, and A Serious Man. I also have a tendency to pass up films such as The Hurt Locker, until my mother forces me to watch them.
So, I should get on seeing those, which means that you guys should petition for my life to postponed– please feel free to call my school instructors, work supervisors and parents and tell them everything must stop so I can indulge in good cinema!
What have you guys seen this year? Anything good? Anything Oscar-worthy~?

I didn’t like Adventureland either. It was so awkward. Like, painfully so. Just… urgh. I also hate Kristen Stewart, so that didn’t really help.
I don’t even know half of the films that were nominated, so I’m not watching.
I liked Adventureland, actually. And (500) Days of Summer, though more realistic than most movies I’ve seen. HBP was great, and I didn’t see the Lovely Bones
I saw Avatar. The end. Forever. Do not need anymore movies. Ever again. The end. Again.
I saw Harry Potter, Avatar, Everybody’s Fine, Law Abiding Citizen, Where the Wild Things Are (I LOVE THIS MOVIE MORE THAN AVATAR), 2012, The Hangover, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, He’s Just Not That Into You, Madea Goes to Jail, Watchmen, Star Trek, District 9 (another amazing movie), Whip It and Capitalism: A Love Story.
Yup, those are ALL the movies I saw that came out in 2009.
I’m probably missing some, but in the last year I saw in cinemas: Under The Mountain, Avatar, Up, District 9, the Toy Story double feature (in 3D!), Sherlock Holmes and Percy Jackson.
Inglourious Basterds was pretty much the only movie I saw this year that really stuck out as good. I’m so, so glad that Christoph Waltz got his Oscar. I love him!
Other 2009 movies I saw that I can remember (in order of how much I enjoyed them) were Horsemen, District 9, The Uninvited, Up, Zombieland, Whip It, Year One, Jennifer’s Body and the remake of Friday the 13th. I got that last one entirely based on the fact that Jared Padalecki was in it. Obviously, I have bad reasons for choosing to watch certain movies.
The only one I’m interested in seeing that I didn’t get a chance to last year is The Lovely Bones.
last year*
It’s MARCH. I should be used to it by now. Geeze.
Sherlock Holmes, Zombieland and Inglourious Basterds were brilliant. Other good movies of 2009 include District 9, Moon and Star Trek. I’ve never seen any of the old Star Trek stuff, but that film was fun. (Hmm, I just noticed that the latter three are all sci-fi…)
What I completely didn’t understand though was why everyone liked The Hangover so much. It’s neither a good movie nor particularly funny.
Not sure if it Oscar worthy, but Zombieland was easily the best film of the past year.
Saw loads of films last year, but that includes ones that were older and I hadn’t seen before. Mike and I are film buffs
Didn’t think much about ‘Up in the Air’ but everyone seems to have loved it. I found it depressing. I loved ‘District 9′ — best sci-fi of the year.
It’s ok, Avatar wasn’t as good as it hyped up to be. I was actually pretty disappointed at my first 3D experience ever. Hurt Locker was a little slow, I thought there would be more action, but guess not.
I think Sherlock Holmes is my all time favorite right now, I was actually pretty surprised by it, I thought it would be pretty bad.
We should go see a movie Ling! I have passes.
I think UP was the movie if the year for me. I love it so much. Avatar doesn’t come close
Oscar movies I’m planning on watching are Up in the Air, Precious, and The Hurt Locker.
Ahaha I didn’t see Avatar either and now that it didn’t take home best picture, I don’t feel so bad, LOL!
I didn’t see Avatar either, and blatantly refuse to see it. I’m not fond of 3D either nor do I appreciate the papyrus, but I was unfortunate enough to have to read a detailed plot synopsis in order to write about the movie for a project (we were technically supposed to see it, but no way was I dropping $14!), and I thought it was absolute AWFUL. It was just loaded with deus ex machina and cliche, and I had the ending predicted just a few sentences in. I’m so glad it didn’t win for best picture, because it takes a lot more than special effects to make a good movie.
The only Oscar nominated movie I saw last year was Up, and I was so happy that it won the Oscar for best score. I’m going to see Avatar on Monday with my boyfriend though, just to see what the hype is all about.
